NEW YORK — Charlie Ergen is moving into the Mexican satellite TV market.
His EchoStar on Tuesday unveiled a joint venture with Mexican media powerhouse MVS Comunicaciones. Financial terms were not disclosed. The venture, Dish Mexico, will offer its service via satellites provided by EchoStar. MVS brings more than 570,000 subscribers to the table.
The service rollout will begin in Puebla and Leon, with an expansion to Mexico’s largest cities planned soon thereafter. It will be available across Mexico in the next few months.
“This joint venture between MVS and EchoStar makes it possible for a large sector of Mexico’s growing population to receive a popular lineup of all digital television channels at an attractive price,” EchoStar chairman and CEO Ergen said. “The opportunity to partner with MVS for a variety of services creates an exciting opportunity for EchoStar as we enter the Mexican market.”
The basic service package includes 25 Spanish and English-language channels for 139 pesos ($10.49) per month.
Among the channels are Disney Channel, Jetix, Nick, Discovery Kids, Cartoon Network, Universal Channel, Sony, Warner Channel, E!, SciFi Channel, ESPN, ESPN 2, Fox Sports, music channels from MTV and Exa TV and movie channels from TNT and Cine Latino.
